Instruction

First, a short soapbox:

I feel that everyone is capable of expressing him/herself musically regardless of the amount of time you have been playing or your skill level. I have been amazed at the compositions of children who have only played a few months as well as the improvisations of thoroughly trained classical musicians who were previously convinced that they were too afraid to improvise a note. I work with people to figure out where they are musically and where they want to go. Everyone has a different way of learning and different goals. Once we ease into your particular style we can expand the parameters of your experience and move toward your musical goals, which, of course, can be fluid, or even non-existent at the moment. I believe that in the right environment, a safe environment, one free of elitism (don’t get me started!) and critical expectation, one can sink into the delicious well of music that is everyone’s birthright.

Kaila's composition workshop was phenomenal. I played her the pieces and ideas that I'd been working on, and within minutes she had me going in new and fruitful directions with them, as well as coming up with fresh ideas to develop for plenty of other compositions. She's quite gifted at bringing out the music you have within you, and I'd heartily recommend her workshops to anyone who wants to jumpstart their creativity.

Kaila has opened my eyes to see music in a whole different way. She has inspired me to go beyond my limits and into new worlds of music.

     Liza Wallace, 15

I've shared some musical space with Kaila in both workshop and private settings. She is amazing! She has a way of meeting you at your comfort level and then, before you know it, has you playing improv passages you never dreamed you'd be willing to take on!
             – Debora Switzer

With Kaila, I've learned to read jazz chords, compose a strong countermelody, arrange traditional Balkan tunes, and find compositional inspiration in the most daunting pieces of music. And it's all been fun. Kaila knows an amazing amount of music from varied cultures. I've reallyenjoyed tapping into that.".

When I met Kaila I was a frustrated classically-trained violinist looking for a fresh musical start. While studying with her my joy of making music returned, and this is priceless.
