Violin: I accept students of all levels, but specialize in working with classically trained violinists who are interested in exploring folk and fiddle styles, jazz and improvising.

I believe that it's important to have great tone, intonation and technique. I also feel that it's important to be able to both read music and play by ear. All of these tools enable a musician to transcribe music, improvise and compose. I believe that everyone can do all of the above if given the chance and proper watering! I teach all of the styles listed above. My current passion is music from Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Composition: I have been composing music inspired by folk music traditions, for over 15 years. When I teach composition, I begin by asking students to burn a CD of their favorite music and to write a few words about why each piece speaks to them. We then pick a piece to learn for inspiration and then collaboratively come up with a first assignment. The student composes a tune containing certain agreed-upon components. We use a cyclic process to expand, refine and hone their piece. This is a very personal and organic process and one that is completely different for each student. I hold periodic recitals for students to share their compositions with one another, which is immensely gratifying and helpful.

Scheduling and rates: I teach both violin and composition (for all instrumentalists) and currently have daytime openings for students of all ages and levels. I prefer one or two hour weekly lessons, but am flexible. I charge $60/hour for individual lessons. Group rates vary. For more information email me at Kaila@kailaflexer.com.
